From Poway Patch:
It’s something that we’re often told to do but we ignore it: Shred your documents before tossing them aside.
Now, two Powegians are taking that rule of thumb and turning it into a business with the help of a 26-year-old nonprofit that focuses on providing services to adults with developmental disabilities, Employment & Community Options.
Poway Super Shredders, which opened its doors on Thursday with a ribbon cutting ceremony, is operated by local residents Regena and Roy, alongside San Diego resident Daniel.
The business will provide concierge shredding services from its Poway office at 12222 Poway Rd.
Rhodes, who has lived in Poway for almost 18 years, said the trio worked hard to market the business through fliers and word of mouth. Mosley, who has lived in Poway since 2006, said she’s excited about the venture.
According to E&CO’s COO Wendy Forkas, the three hosted bake sales to raise funds for a $950 shredder to handle the services. The three will charge $2 per pound of documents shredded and will offer pick-up service.
“This is a great deal of achievement and success for the participants,” said Forkas at the ceremony. “We are extremely excited to have them actively work and bring home a paycheck while supporting their community.”
According to Forkas, this is the second business the nonprofit has opened in the region, with the first being Coronado Microenterprise Group last year. E&CO plans to open another business in Poway, Vending Express, in the next few weeks.
